Presentation of a new technical guide “Innovative solutions involving structural timber in current Galician architecture” and opening of the “Impulso verde (Green impulse)” building in Lugo.

A new technical guide “Innovative solutions involving structural timber in current Galician architecture” was presented at an event held in Santiago de Compostela on 24 March, organised by the Galician Forestry Industry Agency (XERA). The guide, published by XERA, was elaborated by the Platform for Structural Timber Engineering (PEMADE), as a result of the agreement regarding the valorization of forest species in Galicia and promotion of building timber, carried out between 2019 and 2022. The presentation was attended by Belén Feijóo from PEMADE, one of the compilers of the cases presented, and by institutional representatives and representatives from the architectural studios responsible for the projects selected. The guide is available for consultation and download in PDF (in Spanish).

The "Impulso Verde" (Green Impulse) building was inaugurated by the Mayor of Lugo City Council on 1 April. This building is part of the “LIFE Lugo+ Bioclimático” project, funded by the EU programme LIFE+. The project participants included PEMADE-USC, Lugo City Council and County Council and the Polytechnic University of Madrid. This multi-storey building is made from local FSC certified wood and is the first building in Spain in which the construction project also has FSC certification. The inauguration was also attended by Manuel Guaita, the director of PEMADE, who explained the unique characteristics of the building, and by Alberto Rojo, the current president of FSC Spain, who highlighted the importance of the building as a milestone in building certification in the country.
